I'll never forget how the narrator tells the reader in the first chapter, "When you feel like criticizing any one... just remember that all the people in the world haven't had the advantages you've had." It always resonated, how clever to start a book by telling people to keep an open mind, while traveling between all these characters dark thoughts and lives. I remember reading it and imagining what Gatsby's home would be like, a home purposely built for the women he loved, that he had defined his life around. The woman he could never have.
