BEAT GENERATION, HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE FREE?
When I was growing up I read Kerouac' s, On The Road and all I could think was, 'I want a piece of THAT.'
Just like Kerouac wrote, you want to be around "the mad ones, The ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like Fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars and in the middle you see the blue centrelight pop and everyone goes "Awww!" "
This was what beat was about. A generation consumed by life and hungry for it. Whether for its pleasures or for its pains, it did not differentiate. They seemed to take both personal heavens and hells under their wings. Striving for this feeling of aliveness.
Perhaps looking back it all seems quite consuming, all this runnin around bohemian hedonism. But someone had to do it, a boy did these boys show it could be done...
